super miles

i love this kid. i keep having these moments where i just look at him and its like a little shock. he makes me crazy sometimes, but its totally okay. he is amazing. and he is the cutest thing in the world. i keep trying to capture the sounds he makes on film (i promise the video page will be working soon), but he gets camera shy and quiets down as soon as i start recording. but trust me on this, his little squeaks and whatnot are ridiculously adorable.

if you cant tell from his pictures, miles is doing great. he is generally a very happy boy and enjoys new adventures everyday. between me and you, im pretty sure he is some kind of super baby. i have been keeping this to myself for the sake of any regular type babies who might be reading this (youre great too regular type babies, i swear), and of course to protect his secret identity should his life ever call for one. this secret is too big for me though, so i have to let the world know. i dont want to oversell him or anything, but this kid might represent the next stage of human evolution.

he is very focused now, and very curious about the world. when he sees something new he stares at it inquisitively and reaches out to find out what its all about. i cannot express how it feels to witness this. i have never been so proud of reaching out to touch something. he rolled over once and saw a new toy and he just reached right out and grabbed it. at five weeks old, im pretty sure that borders on a super power. now at six weeks old im surprised he isnt flying around the apartment. he probably just doesnt want to cause any trouble (super considerate too).

he definitely has super strength. he was already lifting his head up and looking around at like 3 weeks. now he occasionally head butts his mommy while shes burping him. just for fun. Hes starting to do push-ups during tummy time too, but again, he doesnt want to show off, so hes taking it slow. he also farts with the power of 10 normal babies.

hes getting a lot more smiley now. i think its because he is starting to recognize things and he has a good sense of humor about all the random stuff we have for him to play with. he loves to smile at mommy, but of course, who wouldnt? hes also laughed a few times (especially in his sleep). he gets the goofiest little grin. i cant wait for you all to see it. one of his favorite things to do is pee on his daddy. we gave him a bath on sunday and he peed not once, but twice in the space of 5 minutes; both times on daddy and his own face. he found this hilarious. especially the surprise pee the second time around after he had built up his daddys confidence that he was all done.

were discovering new powers everyday as he grows and grows (already too fast. Another power perhaps?). i cant wait to see what tomorrow holds. hopefully at least a little sleep, particularly for his mommy, who as usual works much too hard. whatever is coming, im sure it will be an adventure. thanks for sharing it with us.

don't worry daddy. i got this.

it was my mom and dad's 35th anniversary yesterday and they weren't able to spend that milestone together because my mom is still in ireland on her business trip. my dad was at our place helping me take care of miles when my mom called to wish him a happy anniversary. it's so sweet to hear my parents share their love and celebrate their marriage with each other. they inspire me to be a good partner and mother and remind me that in the happiest and toughest of times, family always comes first. and through it all, humor is the kicker to having a happy marriage that stands the test of time.

after my mom called, she emailed me and wrote: "Thank you so much, yes it's been 35 years and I hope we will have more anniversaries to come. Tell Dad that I don't want the ring that I am wearing now (suffering) ha ha just joking. Love Mom"

my parents are great.

happy anniversary!

morning breath.

it's 4:11am and i understand now that the key to waking up with morning breath is to sleep for more than a few hours. as we near miles' one-month birthday, i realize i haven't had morning breath in about a month now. waking up with freshly brushed teeth is pretty great. it makes me feel clean and awake. still, this feeling of cleanliness doesn't mean that i love the fact that i don't sleep for more than three or four hours a night.

the other night, mike knox made it a point to get up before i did to feed, burp and change miles so that i can catch a few more hours of sleep. i didn't know how excited i would be to have morning breath. mike knox is great like that. even before miles was born, he knew that i sometimes describe sleep as a luxury and that i don't need as much as the average person. but, being the smart person that he is, mike knox knows that this philosophy of mine is ridiculous and since i'm too stubborn to take care of myself sometimes, he finds gentle ways to trick me into taking care of myself. i hope that miles picks up these little tricks from his dad. it's amazing how having a baby will help illuminate the kindness of other people.

over the past few weeks, jill, fatin, anthony, floyd & kathy, jansen, lele and our parents have come by to drop off dinner for us on different nights. in the same way that mike knox subtly tricks me into getting more sleep, they have tricked us into having healthy, well-cooked meals--meals that we have trouble finding the time for these days. their unexpected kindness has helped us get through these tiring times and we can't thank them enough.

many many props to my mother-in-law for being so great about coming over to visit miles and for encouraging and allowing mike knox and i to spend time together outside of the apartment. she has helped us keep a balanced life and miles loves spending time with his grandma!

everyone's generosity makes me one step closer to waking up with morning breath... and that's a good thing :)
